Rey had been distracted during her legion duties today. But it hadn't been that obvious to most as the girl couldn't speak her troubles and she couldn't be called too silent due to her mute nature. No, one could understand something had been bothering the daughter of Apollo from the way she wielded her borrowed throwing knives. A mere look at her target would be enough. Her aim has been way off and it wasn't like her to miss. The reason for this was a simple e-mail. Her mother was finally coming to New Rome. This morning, when Rey checked her phone for any messages, she opened an e-mail from her mother saying that she had finally made the arrangements to move permanently to New Rome, crafting and repairing instruments for the Romans. These news made Rey very happy. She was going to see her mother again and be certain that she wouldn't be in danger of being attacked by any monsters, even though Rey was no longer there to attract them. But she wasn't sure how her mother would react to so much mythology being real and quite an everyday sighting, or to the fact that she participated in war games and trained to fight to kill. She was anxious, but she took another deep breath and threw her knife. Unfortunately it missed the target she practised on and flew over it, narrowly missing another demigod who was practising close by. Her hands cupping her mouth in shock and worry, she quickly made her way over to apologize and make sure the other was not in need of healing. Which she would've been able to provide on the spot due to her powers. --- Axel Laughlen

It wasn’t one of Axel’s better days to say the least. The new Praetor was still moving his things around in his quarters and organizing things as he saw fit, all while dealing with the daily work. He had to check in with centurions to make sure each cohort was being run smoothly, file away camper’s paperwork, and prepare for the arrival of his twin brother to camp. The boy had no idea when he would “graduate” from Lupa’s training, and anxiety was eating away at his mind because of it. Axel was worried that Brett wouldn’t be able to fight his way through in a timely manner, but he was probably just worrying over nothing. Either way, it took a toll on his training for the day.
Axel couldn’t focus on paperwork any longer, and he needed an outlet for all of his stress. Putting on his armor over his jeans and black shirt, he grabbed his sword on the way out of his quarters, while his imperial gold daggers always hung at his side. Axel’s armor was new as well, made to display his rank in the legion, as his breastplate bore an eagle. Even for him the get-up seemed a bit flashy.
Axel had been practicing his long range throws with his knives on a target, usually only using them for close combat fighting. He didn’t notice anyone else in the arena until another knife came flying from behind him, just nicking his ear, and stuck into the target he had been practicing on. Already stressed, rage bubbled up inside the demigod as he whipped around, hand on his slightly bleeding ear. Before he even saw the other legionnaire, he growled, “Who the hell could miss a target that much to hit someone else?” He met eyes with the girl, softening a bit to see that it was Rey Summers. Axel knew the girl meant no harm and it was most likely an accident. Rey was probably one of the calmest demigods he’d ever met, although the praetor didn't know her very well. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have snapped like that…” he apologized. Offering his condolences to the girl, he took Rey's knife out of his target and held it out to her with a sympathetic face.

The demigod seemed familiar to her from behind and, as he turned around growling about who had the nerve of missing a target so poorly, Rey flinched both because of the anger as well as the fact she had been the one to miss. The irony behind a child of Apollo missing a target was enough to bring a faint blush on her cheeks. When she realized that she had just hit her Centurion she felt like she wanted the Earth to open up and swallow her whole. The gleaming eagle on Axel's breastplate made her gulp. He had been a Praetor now too. She was in big trouble. On instinct her first action was to sign to him "I am so sorry, I didn't mean to!" Her hand moves were a bit more frantic than usual. She paused however when Axel's face softened and he handed her her dagger, apologizing for snapping at her. She was taken by surprise and she shook her head to indicate it was fine. There was nothing he should apologize for. If that was any indication then perhaps she was not in as much trouble as she thought she would be. Her eyes studied him for a moment, scanning him for any signs of him beng hurt by her stupid act. The hand on his ear and the few drops of blood visible made her grimace slightly. Her face showed guilt and she she reached out tentantively to remove his hand so she could take a look at the wound. It was just a scratch. Nothing to worry over. As legionaires they had been used to considering more serious injuries than this as nothing but a mere scratch. However that still didn't make Rey feel less bad about what had happened. Biting her lower lip, she brought her left hand up to his ear. She allowed it to hover less than an inch away from the cut and her eyes seemed more focus. A second later, a warm light shone from her cupped palm and new skin began to form on the Centurion's ear. It was as good as new a few moments later and Rey took a deep breath as if she had just done a sudden spreed. Healing injuries like these weren't difficult, but using her powers still took a toll on her. No matter how small. She took a step back as she examined her work. She smilled contently as she was quite pleased with herself. She might've messed up, but she had more or less managed to fix the situation fast enough. --- Axel Laughlen

When Axel turned around, he saw the girl flinch from his aggressive reaction. He felt bad, knowing that he should not have acted in such a way to anyone in his legion. He did not want his reputation around camp to turn sour. The boy watched as Rey signed him from what he could tell was an apology, but it was difficult to make out with how fast she was signing. From being Rey’s Centurion since she had arrived to camp, Axel knew she was mute. In efforts to understand her better, the boy had taught himself some basic sign language. It was the least he could do for the girl, and it was better than her having to pull her phone out and text him when she needed to say something.
Axel was able to make out the word “sorry” and that was enough for him. He shook his head. “I’m sure it was an accident, no biggie.” he sighed, letting his shoulders relax. Axel was here to de-stress, and he couldn’t let a small scratch get in the way of that. Although he found it quite odd that a child of Apollo, a god who was supposed to be second to none when it came to accuracy, had missed her target entirely and hit him instead. A confused look emerged on Axel’s face, following the girl’s eyes as she studied him. Is she checking me out or something…? The son of Venus couldn’t help but to think of such a thing. He was sure she enjoyed the view anyway, who wouldn’t like to see a muscular man in full battle armor?
As Rey brought her hand closer to his face, Axel didn’t flinch, but was frozen in shock, completely unaware of what she was doing. Coming in for a kiss already? Damn this is the first time I’ve been with her alone. he joked in his head. “What are you…” he trailed off. It didn’t occur to the Praetor that one of her powers was the ability to heal injuries until he felt the warmth coming from her palm. Axel felt his ear once Rey was done and had taken a step back, impressed with her work. “Thank you.” he signed, hoping his basic knowledge would slightly make up for his sour attitude.
Still confused as to why someone with as deadly accuracy as the daughter of Apollo, Axel decided to prod a bit. “So what brings your dagger to my ear today, everything alright?” he asked. He felt as if being in a higher position, it was almost obligatory to “take care” of the individuals in the legion. Axel almost felt like a parental figure in a way.

Rey smilled. A happily surprised expression brightened up her face as Axel signed back at her. She didn't need the people she interacted with to sign in order to understand them. She wasn't deaf, but still it felt nice when people showed her they knew at least some basic knowledge of her primary means of communication. Then the question came and, while she soundlessly chuckled at his choice of words, she flushed a deep red in embarassment. Her eyes looked briefly to the ground, shifting uncomfortably for a brief moment before looking up at him again. Putting her knife away to be able to use both hands flawlessly, she began a slow signing routine. "My mom is coming to New Rome." She said and looked at Axel expectantly, her head slightly tilted to the side. She knew that in an effort to make her feel more comfortable and welcome at the Legion, but she couldn't be sure as to the extend of his knowledge. He did manage to understand the fact she had signed to him how sorry she was about hitting him, but would he understand that her mom was coming over? Her hand reached for her smartphone, neatly tucked in her back pocket of her jeans, right next to her favorite pair of drumsticks. There was no harm in typing up what she needed to explain in order to be able to get across eachother faster. --- Axel Laughlen

Axel smiled back at Rey as she brightened up at him signing to her. He was also glad she took his question well with good humor. Although she seemed a bit embarrassed as she looked at the ground, Axel couldn’t blame her though, it wasn’t everyday a kid of Apollo missed their target. He figured something must have been bothering her for something like that to happen. Axel watched as Rey signed her answer, focusing hard on what she was saying. Deciphering her words, he nodded and replied, “Oh, that’s great! Why are you nervous about it though?” He asked. The boy could relate though, as his brother was expected to arrive at camp any day now. “My brother’s joining the legion soon, so I can see where you’re coming from.”In all honesty, Axel was a nervous wreck. So many questions ran through his mind daily, hourly even. Will he place well in cohorts? Was he skilled with a weapon? Was he still excited? Would he make other friends? Normally Axel didn’t wear his feelings on his sleeve, but the thoughts had been gnawing at him enough that anxiety kept him up at night, so he looked pretty tired and worn. To recoup and try to erase his worry off his face, disliking the feeling of looking vulnerable, he went to his target and detached his knives and slid them back in their holsters at his waist as he walked back to face Rey. Rey nodded. It was indeed great that her mother was coming to New Rome. That way it could be like old times. When it was the two of them being best buddies through the days. But her mother was also prone to worrying about Rey ever since bullying had been taken to a whole new level. So in order to not stress her mother, Rey hadn't told her that she had joined the Legion. She had merely told her she was safe and described to her the life of a civilian in New Rome. "My mom tends to worry a lot. I haven't told her I've joined the Legion." She signed to him and tilted her head slightly as he told her that he could understand her feelings. So that's what he had seemed so stressed about recently? Ontop of him being Praetor and Centurion, his brother was on his way to New Rome, all alone and without a way of knowing wether he was going to make it or not. Rey felt slightly embarrassed that she had been so stressed about her mother coming, when the woman was in no danger of being attacked every step of the way. Worry had creased Axel's face and Rey decided she should help but, before she could say something, her Centurion had turn his back on her. Seemingly to recover his knives, but Rey knew better. She was quick to type in her phone. "If he is anything like you, you have nothing to worry about. Except maybe a monster falling in love with him and they decide to get married. XD" She grinned at him as she showed him the text. He had just turned to face her again, looking much more confident and composed, but Rey was pretty sure it was mostly an act. He had been promoted to the Head of Legion status, so he was probably trying to act a lot more like the allmighty leader that nothing could shake him than before. --- Axel Laughlen

Axel could appreciate how much Rey’s mother coming to New Rome would help her in the legion. With Axel’s twin brother and sister being closer to him in the city, he was able to keep close to his family and relax when his responsibilities in the legion gnawed at his sanity. He nodded in understanding at Rey’s comment and wondered why she chose to leave out her joining the legion. ”Isn’t it going to be hard to explain to her why you won’t be living with her then?” Axel questioned. Even though it might have dampened the girl’s mood, Axel was an idealist. It came with the leadership roles he held. One had to think logically in order to get things done effectively. The praetor didn’t feel the need to go into his worries with his legionnaire. Axel did not like to worry others with his problems, as they seemed to have enough on their plate just by being in the legion. He disliked when others knew of his weaknesses, therefore his emotions were closed off most of the time. This was the reason for clearing his face of worry by retrieving his knives. When coming back up to Rey, he gave a soft smile, attempting to relive the girl as well as himself of their worries. Chuckling as he bent down slightly to read Rey’s typed message on her phone, he responded, “As long as he takes after me, he should be fine.” If Axel was anything, he was a bit full of himself. He knew it, too. The boy was tough, and he expected nothing less of his twin brother. The boys were muscular, so fighting shouldn’t be a problem for Brett. “I honestly wouldn’t be too surprised if something like that happened.” he joked and his smile widened as Rey’s joke began to calm his nerves. He and Brett did have their way with words… and girls. Axel didn’t think the camp was ready for the reunion of the devious twins of Venus, but was excited for their debut nonetheless, as long as Brett got here in one piece. Rey Summers

Rey laughed even though no sound was heard. Smilling she signed to Axel "That's the spirit." She then raised her right pointer finger in a 'hold on' gesture. She began typing on her phone again. "My mother is a pacifist and she worries a lot about me. Mostly because I can't talk. If I'm in trouble nobody will know. So to know that I am training as a soldier, expected to fight or go on a quest if the gods so choose... It will make her panic. I've told her that the Legion teaches self-defense and is more of a boarding school than anything." She explained, handing her phone to him so he would be able to read it at his own leisure. She could already feel her mood improving just by talking to Axel. Maybe it was because he was a Son of Venus, so it was his charm talking, or maybe it was just the fact Rey was talking to a friend about what had been keeping her excited and nervous for a few days now. She placed her daggers into their holster and put them away for now. She no longer felt the need to practise and taking a look at her result on the target board made her cringe. This was unacceptable and she would have to work on her aim while being distracted. But not yet. --- Axel Laughlen
